As we know, English has become a hugely important thing in this developed era. In this era where information, technology, and science developed very swiftly, the need of good communication skill is very inevitable. The skill to talk and communicate in English as an international language is very indispensable. Therefore, Social Service Division decided to go to elementary school to teach English so they can improve their confidence to talk in English.
This is also a form of community service that we do as part of the aim of this division. Teaching elementary school kids English also a great way to improve the communication skill of SPE member since it needs a great deal of interactive and fun way to be able to connect with the kids.
As it was planned before, we would hold SPE Teach English once a month. We decided to choose SD Negeri 2 Cisitu as the elementary school we go for this event because it is quite close to our university. The event had planned to be start at 11.45 am, right after the school is over, but due to a meeting that all teachers had to attend, the event then shifted to 10.00 am. This became a quite a problem for us, because we had just known this a day before our event. Due to most of us had a class during that time, we had to find a people who could come to the school before 10.00 am to do all the preparation. But thankfully, our class was over sooner so we were able to join other staff and member that have been on the elementary school earlier. The topic we chose for this lesson is ‘time’. We chose this topic to coincide with the school curriculum. Frankly, it was quite hard to handle the elementary school kids, but as time went by we managed to get through all of the materials we gave. There are 2 classes of 5th grades on this elementary school with 3-4 SPE members in each class as the teacher for the kids.
Although, we faced a problem about the impromptu changed schedule from the elementary school, but overall this event has been held swimmingly. Indeed, there are still few things that can be improved for the next meeting, but we are glad to know that most of the students really showed their participation and interest on our event. Same to us, we felt great to be able to share something and enjoy laugh and fun with the kids.
